Armor glistened in the sunlight
Sable, or and gules, tierced palewise
Herald of my fell intention,
Graceful muscle, taut and patient
Sleek and sinuous, unmoving
Holding firm against invasion,
Dressed in jeweled brigantine, a
Living noose to snare unwary
Trespassers in my dominion,
Not for me the boastful rattle
Or my cousin's unfurled banners;
Threats are for the craven.
What am I?

Re: Coral (a riddle poem)
Mon, February 4, 2008 - 8:23 PMnot a rattlesnake:
Not for me the boastful rattle
Or my cousin's unfurled banners;...
that sable black
and red of gules,
may strike fear to those
shining from my faceted armoured scales
but from palewise slanted stripes,
somewhat of a pirate I could be,
perhaps a predatory gila monster
just dont step on me

Re: Coral (a riddle poem)
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 1:32 PMFolks got close! The final clue was the title of the poem.
Its a coral snake.
Close cousin to the cobra (unfurled banners) and banded black, yellow, and red. (sable, or and gules)
I'm glad people enjoyed this! I did it as an exercise in trochaic verse and wasn't sure how it would be taken. Perhaps I'll try more riddle poems. -
